Costumes for Sport and the Dance By GERTRUDE GIBSON RoBINSON T COSTUME FOR THE DANCE SEE PAGE 7 Costumes for Sport and the Dance By GERTRUDE GIBSON RoBINSON T 146 SuMMER STREET BOSTON, MASS. LEOTARD AND DANCE SKIRT BECAUSE of my experience in teaching physical educa~ tion in college,Y.W . C. A. and normal school, I know the difficulties of acquiring good looking, practical costumes. It was because of my own personal satisfaction in wear• ing this material that I appealed to the manufacturer to make costumes for the active sport and dance world. As a result, thirty~one different styles have been made. The day of a uniform being definitely and distinctly a uniform, should have passed. The day of investing for a school uniform, which is discarded at the end of a one or tw~year requirement, should have passed. With attractive costumes available, which in no way resemble the old~fashioned "uniform," why not let youth be neatly and nattily attired during her school years? At the end of her "requirement," she will still have a sports costume to enjoy, because of its style, because of its comfort. Physical education students, ca. 1925.
Clothing shaped group identity as much as the other recreational activities and rituals at Bouvé. Before mass-produced clothing became common, students ordered custom fit outfits from local tailors, which ensured uniformity in cut and color. A catalog from the store of Gertrude Gibson Robinson, a graduate of the Boston School of Physical Education, appealed to potential shoppers through comfort and practical concerns. Each successive generation of students bemoaned the uniform requirement. Whether complaining about lack of choice or the restrictions placed upon movement, these frequent yet light-hearted jests became a school tradition in themselves. Uniforms for sports, camp, and the classroom evoked memories encompassing the whole Bouvé experience.
